Cornerstone for All Saints
Laying of Cornerstone of All
Saints Church - September 16, 1934
Rev. Frank W. Creighton,
Suffrage Bishop (left), Rev. Ernest M Stires, Bishop (center), Rev. Victor
H. Loope (right) The
Right Rev. Stires Bishop of Long Island, Officiated at the laying of the cornerstone
for the new All Saints Episcopal Church at 43-12 46 Street Sunnyside. Plans
for the church call for a Gothic edifice of brick and stone, with a sitting
capacity of 300. Assisting the Bishop was the Right Rev. Loope, rector of
All Saints. Bishop Stires blessed the altar, baptismal font, cross,
candlesticks, vases, processional cross, communion rail and memorial gifts.
The parish
organized November 4, 1928, and Mr. Victor Loope became its first resident
rector. He assumed his duties June 9th, 1929, two days after he graduated
from Philadelphia Divinity School. There were twelve in the
congregation the first Sunday Mr. Loope preached: the church had twenty-eight
members. Services were then held in the Monroe Court community room, 43-13
47th Street, Sunnyside Gardens. (We
thank Agatha Raschke for providing this important information)
