43rd Street Movie Theater

This picture comes from" Tax Department Photographs 1940- the New York City Municipal Archives"
The 43rd St. movie house located at 42-16 Greenpoint Avenue between 42nd & 43 Street. The 43rd Street Theatre was built and operated by the Century Circuit, it showed its double-feature programs a week after they'd played the Bliss and Sunnyside, which were also Century theatres. The 43rd Street first opened in 1938 and survived until around 1950, its last few years under the management of the Springer circuit, which took over some of Century's lesser theatres. The A & P Supermarket was right next door. We are delighted to add this picture to our collection, it was not easy to find. The big double feather playing back then, was Ray Milland starring in "So Evil My Love" and "Variety Girl'.  On the corner of 43rd Street and Greenpoint Avenue was a large luncheonette called The Sugarbowl looking across the street you will find Nelson's Hardware where our Sunnyside library is now located. On 42nd Street and Greenpoint Avenue was a Photography Studio we believe called Edwards.
