The New York Times says...
East of Midtown, It's the Art of the Meal

...At 39th Street, you'll find "Hemsin,"  a large Turkish restaurant with a stainless-steel counter and refrigerated cases that run almost the entire length of the room, which is saying something. You can come here for Turkish coffee and terrific desserts - the kadayif, a kind of crisp, syrupy shredded-wheat cake, is incredible- or for a good complete meal. The restaurant offers a variety of skewered Lamb entrees, as well as  assorted Kofte, (grilled ground lamb) and eggplant dishes. There are also Turkish pizzas (called pides). including a ridiculously inexpensive and delicious lahmacun ($2.50)that is a must no mater what else you order. My favorite single item was a lentil kofte, part of the huge mezze assortment that is a wise appetizer choice. or by itself. The restaurant, though usually fairly busy, is calm, quite and attractive, and not cramped, with high ceilings and a great deal of natural light.

Luscious for less, The 10 Best

...eat anywhere good lately? "my friends always ask me. And it's never a problem to come up with a place that's quirky or surprising or just plain delicious. Sometimes all three. Now you can be my friend, too, and share my 10 favorites of 2001...
....this spacious cafe is one of the leaders. Think yogurt and lamb, peppery salads and eggplant, warm puffed flatbreads, sugar drenched pastries and cups of sweet black coffee."
